The challenge

The alley ran between apartment buildings and carports, a tight site to demolish and rebuild. Tree roots, stump grindings and planter soil had to be dug out to 12 inches and replaced with baserock, and the gutter had to meet the sidewalk at a flush transition.

Once the gutter line was open, the soil under it turned out soft. A change order added 6 inches of excavation and 6 inches of Class II baserock over 400 SF so the concrete would sit on a base that could hold it.

How it was executed

A skid steer with a breaker attachment broke out the old pavement. The crew then set forms and two rows of #4 rebar for the 140 LF valley gutter, and placed the concrete from a mixer chute, screeding it by hand.

With the gutter in, the base was graded and compacted with a roller, then 4 inches of hot-mix asphalt (about 110 tons) went down over 4,340 SF. Seal coat followed in two coats, with latex in the mix.

The result

The alley now has a new concrete valley gutter down its center, a rebuilt base under 4 inches of new asphalt, and a sealed finish, with the soft ground under the gutter dealt with before anything was poured on it.
