The challenge

This project consisted of grinding and paving 72,000 SF of City of Hayward streets up in the Hayward Hills. After notifying all the homeowners in the neighborhood, we came in, milled 100% of Arbutus Court and Quercus Court to a depth of 2 inches, then paved it back.

These are residential streets in the hills, and they're the only way in and out for the families who live on them. We couldn't simply shut them down for as long as the work took.

Hill roads also bring grade and drainage concerns that a flat parking lot doesn't. Milling the full width to a steady 2 inches really matters on a slope, because uneven depth shows up right away as a rough ride and as water running where it shouldn't.

How it was executed

We milled both roads across their entire width instead of patching them in strips. That gets rid of the joints and seams that make a patched street ride rough and wear out early.

Every household got notice before we mobilized so residents could plan around the two-day window, and we kept the work tight to that window on purpose.

The result

72,000 SF milled and repaved in two days, leaving the neighborhood with one smooth, uniform surface to and from their homes instead of a patchwork.
